Treasure maps and lost wrecks of old pirate ships have been the subjects of many adventure novels and movies, but modern day treasures seekers bring the fantasy of finding chests full of gold coins to real life with expeditions and salvage operations deployed in search of sunken treasures hidden beneath the sea.

One of these modern day treasure hunters was Mel Fisher, who in 1985 discovered the wreck of the Spanish galleon “Nuestra Senora de Atocha” and recovered $450 million in 40 tons of gold, silver and emeralds. The Nuestra sunk in 1622 and is one of the biggest sunken treasure discoveries in history.

Charles Beeker led another amazing expedition to bring up sunken treasures from a watery grave when in December of 2007 his team found gold, silver and other precious cargo in the wreckage of Captain Kidd’s ship the “Quedadh Merchant” in less than 10 feet of water. He had been looking for the ship for 20 years.

The crystal blue waters of the Caribbean were used as hideaways for many of the pirates and privateers during the golden age of piracy from 1650 to 1720. It was estimated that were over 2,000 pirates terrorizing cargo, passenger and naval ships passing through routes in the Caribbean and the North American coast. The result is a graveyard of 300 documented shipwrecks with over half of these speculated to be carrying salvageable treasures of gold and other pirate plundered booty.

In January of 2009 rumors about another treasure seeking expedition hit the Caribbean newspapers. Sub Sea Research is said to have discovered a British World War II ship off the coast of Guyana that was headed for the US Treasury before it was sunk by the Germans. There is talk that the ship was carrying 10 tons of gold bullion, 70 tons of platinum and millions of carats of diamonds. To date no one has filed a claim for the wreckage, but as with all tales of sunken treasures it still makes for a good story.
