San Diego Gold Buyers – David Levi and Sons Jewelers

Answering the question of how is gold measured is not as easy as it sounds. Many people ponder this question but almost never really get a clear answer. If someone is in the market to buy or sell gold, knowing how gold is measured is important.

Gold is officially measured by what is referred to as troy weight and by grams. It is not until it becomes alloyed with other metals the term karat is applied. When gold’s weight is measured in karats, it indicates the amount of gold present. 24 karat is considered pure gold with the ratings becoming progressively less such as 18 karat and 14 karat.

When the purity of a gold bar or gold coin is measured it is referred to as a decimal figure with a spectrum of 0 to 1. These decimal figures are known as millesimal fineness. One example of an extremely pure gold bar is one that has a millesimal fineness that is 0.995.

The gold standard is term used for an economic system that allocates a certain weight of gold and then gives it the name of a unit of currency. For example, in the 1920’s the United States government set the value of the US dollar so that one troy ounce would equal the value of $20.67 in US dollars. In 1934 the dollar became devalued so that one troy ounce was equal to $35.00 in US dollars. In 2009, one troy ounce was equal to $1200.00 in US dollars.
